Employers are thinking differently about what they want from entry-level staff, and about how best to develop them, according to a new report from recruitment firm Experis.

A series of in-depth interviews interrogated the attitudes of senior HR professionals toward entry-level staff, and found frustration at the gap between the skills possessed by today’s graduates and the skills required to succeed in business.

As a consequence, HR specialists are increasingly investing in bespoke training for entry-level staff to develop necessary skills. This ‘grow your own’ mentality enables companies to develop future leaders in line with their unique corporate cultures.

The study also suggests that over next decade the development of a global mindset in staff will become crucial to progression. Entry-level staff will be increasingly expected to bring with them a demonstrable understanding of the global market, which will be reinforced by the employer with entry-level projects and responsibilities.
