Mondelez International recently conducted a poll of 1,600 school leavers across the UK and found that just 8% were looking to pursue a career in manufacturing. In contrast, 26% were looking to work in marketing & media and 29% in fashion & retail.
Thirty-nine per cent believed a job in manufacturing would be physically demanding and a desk job was stated as more preferable due to better pay (73%) and more glamour (86%).
Neil Chapman, spokesman for Mondelez International, said: ‘It illustrates that the industry and government need to collaborate to make young people enthusiastic about manufacturing again. Schools and universities also need to equip young people with practical skills manufacturers need.’
It seems a key barrier is lack of understanding, with 45% of young people admitting in the survey that they had limited knowledge about the manufacturing sector.
