The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has made a number of recommendations to redress the UK’s ‘chronic’ skills gap.
In its new report, Tomorrow’s Growth, the CBI argues that simply maintaining traditional university courses will leave the UK with a major skills deficit in graduate professions like manufacturing, construction, IT and engineering.
More must be done to inform, train, fund and otherwise incentivise new generations of UK workers, the report suggests.
The report calls for more employer-backed sandwich courses, where students undertake work placements as part of their studies. It further asks that employers increase their commitment to high-quality training schemes, such as apprenticeships and school leaver schemes.
Policy Director Katja Hall says: ‘The UK needs to vastly increase the stock of workers with higher-level skills to drive long-term growth and stop us falling behind our competitors. We need to tackle the perception that the A levels and three-year degree model is the only route to a good career.’
