Nearly 80% of IT professionals will see several changes in their responsibilities, required skills and business objectives over the next five years, a major study by business advisory group CEB has revealed.
IT organisations and departments will be forced to adapt to changing business needs, with traditional IT roles, such as developer, datacentre administrator and network administrator, likely to disappear from the corporate IT department altogether.
However, Andrew Horne, managing director of the CEB’s IT leadership council, qualifies that traditional IT roles will still exist within IT supply companies.
‘If you are an individual in a technical role, you may have a great future, but your role will be with a cloud provider or a software supplier, rather than an IT group,’ said Horne.
Instead, IT departments will increasingly recruit people with solid business skills, who will be expected to help other departments procure, rather than run, the necessary IT systems.
