A new government report charts a 13.9% climb in the number of apprenticeships since the previous year. The number of people starting an apprenticeship in the 2011/12 academic year passed the half million mark.

The engineering sector experienced a notable surge, with 59,480 new apprentices representing a 21.5% increase on the previous year.

There was also a 67.6% increase in higher apprenticeships. Business Secretary Vince Cable sees these results as a sign that the government investment in vocational training is paying off.

Ann Pickering, HR Director at O2, concurs: “Targeted in the right way, apprenticeships are one of the most valuable ways to help young people into work. And all business should remember that.”
