Total retail sales saw a rise of 3% on year for January, according to UK figures from the British Retail Consortium (BRC).
The most recent Retail Sales Monitor from the BRC and KPMG also found that “like for like” sales values had risen 1.9% year on year. Meanwhile, sales online saw a rise of 10.1% year on year.
BRC director general Helen Dickinson suggested that the numbers would cheer a lot of people.
She added that retailers were not expecting sales to be great over Christmas and as a result undertook good preparation, entering 2013 with a lower level of stock to sell on this year compared to in 2012.
“All in all, these figures give a sense that the mood is lifting a little for customers and retailers. Let’s hope it continues,” the director general said.
